The Square
Charlie Phelps used to stand here and stare

Up through the elms that are not here anymore.

What was he looking for? Whenever anyone asked,

He said, "Nuttin." The buildings are the same

Though most of the stores and beer joints have changed.

The Melody Inn could never be that now.

But what do we know? We barely remember

And what we do is not the case. When were the iron benches removed? And

To where? Was everyone we knew or didn't know

Carted off to a human dump? Let's go to your place

Mix gin and forget. Every night for weeks

I have lain awake, drilling lines to satisfaction and then

Rolled over and gone back to sleep.

But there is no such thing.
