Strongsville,
1983. The streets are all still two lanes. There's no mall,
there's...barely anything. Nothing like it is now. Above all
there's nothing to do. And this is where things like Suburban
Decay happen. Negative Print founders Eric Barth, Dave James,
and Steve-0 formed this band with Eric's brother on Lead Vocals
originally, as a hardcore band with a sense of humor. It was
for fun, a side-project to the stuff that Steve and Dave were
doing in Steve-0's basement in Parma, demoing songs (that's
originally what Death Of Samantha was supposed to be too really).
They wrote songs like Death To Jocks, Bread ("we usually never
have bread...but when we do....IT'S ALWAYS RRRRYYYYEEEEE!!!!"....that's
the whole song), Hi! (consisting of a slide down the bass/guitar
neck then everybody goes...you guessed it "HI!"), and 715 (a
10 second ode apparently to some sort of pills that DJ wrote,
eventually made it on to an actual vinyl punk compilation! on
purple vinyl! and to think, these guys actually had some real
songs too!). Sadly, around when they started doing shows, Kevin
quit. Steve Wainstead was auditioned once, and even said to
be a member of the band in an interview with Steve-0/Wainstead/Eruk/Dave.
Alas, it wasn't meant to be and they soldiered on with Eruk/Dave
trading the vocal duties. After doing some shows at the Lakefront,
Pop Shop etc., and making the Go Die video (which is considered
to be a cinematic masterpiece to whomever's seen it, and you
know who you are), they fizzled out in late 84 when Steve-0
quit both Suburban Decay and Negative Print to focus on Death
Of Samantha. For a short period of time the band mutated into
New Small Appliances (which did one song, sans Mr.0, on They
Pelted Us With Rocks And Garbage).
