Last
summer Dink and I went to see the Styrenes (who were in from
New York) playing at the Beachland Tavern. Opening that night
was St. Jayne and the Defnics (who announced from the pulpit
that they had become the Chrome Kickers). It was a great evening
of entertainment. She particularly enjoyed the Styrenes rendition
of EYES OF SATAN with Paul on lead vocals. After the show we
went to my brothers house in Willoughby and crashed on the couch.
Waking up Sunday morning before my brother and his wife we decided
to go get some breakfast. As we were leaving Dennys I spotted
Cheese Borger who was waiting for a table with Paul and the
guys getting ready for their long drive home; we said hello
and how much we liked the playing and singing the night before.
We stepped outside and found John Morton standing by the newspaper
boxes finishing a cigarette; in an effort to say something more
original and relevant than " hey, great show" I spotted
the paper boxes and lamented "And you can't even buy the
TIMES". He informed me that he had just bought a copy at
the big bookstore a bit earlier. I was just proud of the fact
that I called it the TIMES as would a New Yorker and not the
NEW YORK TIMES and sounded like a rube. It's like in China,
they wouldn't say let's go out for Chinese food, they would
just say let's get some food.
