Planet
Log 3000 is Cleveland's Post-Punk Power-Pop Postulate!
It has been an active part of Cleveland?s indie music
scene, in one form or another, since 1994.
Group
members are Martin Drabik (drums), Suave DePietro (guitar),
Dale Houston (bass), and Shelley Drabik (guitar). All
band members write songs and sing.
The
original band formed in late 1993 as "Log,"
somewhere in a dark basement outside of Cleveland (both
East- and West- siders). Shortly thereafter, the band
discovered another Ohio band with the same name, lost
a guitar (the founder, Todd Knuth), gained a banjo (Dave
P. Miller), and changed its name to "Planet Log."
Planet
Log, in addition to playing in various Cleveland, Akron,
and other reasonable-driving-distance venues, self-released
a CD, "Venus in Leopard Print," and recorded
a 3-song demo tape produced by Kramer (Noise New Jersey)
in 1996. Overall, the sound of Planet Log was quirky
lo-fi, often compared to early B-52's. Reviews in 1996
said: "humor reminiscent of the Dead Milkmen,"
and singers sounding a bit like the "guy singer...of
the Cramps" and the "girl singer...of the
Avengers."
In
early 1997, the banjo player, inexplicably left the
sunny and splendiferous shores of Lake Erie for the
dismal grayness of San Francisco. (We suspect it had
something to do with the band's new 'less twang, more
bang' policy.) Briefly, Keith Kanderski, a guitarist
from the late, great local band 'Pudding and Fruit'
joined up. However, other commitments forced yet another
change of guitarist, and the current lineup came together
in late 1997.
With
a desire to move toward a more 'rocking' sound, the
band transformed into 'Planet Log 3000' and resumed
playing gigs in the Cleveland and Akron areas in early
1998. Planet Log 3000 was featured on WRUW FM 91.1's
"Live From Cleveland" in 1998. Planet Log
3000 is currently in pre-production for a new CD, expected
to be released in late 2001.
