Banana, Pittsburgh,1990. The show was real boring and they gave
the band pizza for their efforts. In return the club was vandalized
and later that night a hotel room was destroyed and set fire
the next morning. It is rumored that Johnny is still wanted
in pittsburgh for arson. More stories if memory permits sometime. |

I
will never forget the show at Flash Gordon's on Lorain Rd. in
Cleveland Oh. It was your regular show, One Beat Off takes the
stage and makes it through around 3 songs when someone decides
to throw some fireworks on stage for a little fun. The band
continues to tear through there songs and then the power goes
down on the stage and they tell everyone to get out. That's
when things started to get ugly.
Next thing you know there is shit flying every where people
fighting with the staff and demanding their money back. Finally
they get every one outside and it gets worse; the bouncers are
getting their asses kicked, people are on the roof throwing
bottles and cans anything they could find, and that's when I
jumped in my car and flew out of there. Some people say that
was what made them shut the place down. It's all history now. |

Thanks to a bouncer or one of my "friends" I got
my head slashed open. I remember going to the hospital and
seeing this kid who was just getting out, my friend Phil broke
his nose 2 hours before in the parking lot. Real punks cant
stop me dunks!

One Beat Off had a cool unpolished sound kinda like a poppier
version of Morris/Chavo era Black Flag. One of the few local
bands keeping the true punk spirit alive in the 'alternative
nation' early 90's. What I remember most about them is that
they had a small but very devote, very drunk (apparently they
owned stock in the Busch Beer company) following. They were
the first guys I ever saw sporting the "gas station attendant"
look way before it became alterna-teen passe. I was in a band
that opened for them in '92 at Flash Gordon's (possibly the
most embarrassing rock club in history). We had 11 songs that
were supposed to last 30 mins but as soon as we were done
with the first song, the OBO crew showered us with "Fuck
You's" "You Suck" "FAGGOTS", spit
and swaying middle fingers. We were so freaked out that we
ended up pulling off our set in about 15 mins, because we
didn't want to listen to thier shit in between songs. After
the set, the bouncers advised us to load our gear out the
front, which was kind of unprecendented because the front
door was usually reserved for national acts. We felt like
rockstars for a moment until the bouncers informed us that
the reason we were working out the front was because the entire
OBO "fan" posse was gathered in the back parking
lot and waiting to kick our heads in with pool cues in hand
(which in our naive youth we were actually worried about a
buncha of whiteboy burnouts). Later on when OBO played, there
was a bar brawl royale, and supposedly there was a CPD helicopted
overhead monitoring the bullshit, which surely must have been
a new sight for the residents of West Park. God Bless the
Irish.

One Beat Off always fascinated me because I thought they should
have been a lot more popular than they were in the early 1990s.
I mean they played pretty competently and seemed pretty popular.
I never really understood why this band couldn't get it together,
especially since their competition was like: A Lesser Squid,
The Secret Agents, and that other band with John Farner (?),
Unknown, for the kings of the Westside. I think its kind of
funny to see those guys walking down the street nowadays. I
do remember their show at Dancin' in Parma which is certainly
the lamest club ever (in a lasertag arcade). It was pretty good,
with the exception of the drummer being on a huge riser.... |
