1985.
I had been going around Tremont trying to give some
lyrics I had written to different bands when Tim Kelly
[SA] said, " Floyd, why dont you just start your own
band?" I answered, "I can't sing." He replied, "thats
the beauty of punk rock, you dont have to be able to
play or sing." I was sold. Dave Mallchok, my neighbor
and friend, lived next door. He played drums, had a
P.A. and also practice space. Triple bonus. I recruited
Dan Garmen. Tim Kelly and Tom Miller also came aboard.
We had about 10 songs down and still no name. I remember
Tim wanted to call it Titanic, for obvious reasons,
I favored Special Ed, also for obvious reasons. We were
invited to play a party, and still no name. Word had
gotten around, Floyd's band would be playing. And Floyd
Band stuck. Coming up in the music scene, I always dug
the onstage antics of Alex Harvey, the Ramones, Alice,
DEVO and Clevo's own beloved Baloney Heads. No one in
the Cleve scene was keeping that tradition alive, 'cept
maybe Darryl in Numbskull or Cheese and Les in the Pink
Holes. So we gathered props of assorted goofiness. The
rock and roll circus was in town. Thanks Dave Mallchok,
I bear the great memories along with the scars of our
unique friendship and collaboration.
