Break
out your brooms! Here come the Babushka Men! After The
Dissidents played their last show at WRUW's second annual
Studio-A-Rama. The band unofficially broke up (it was
never verbalized among the band members). Paul and Scott
went onto individual projects and Koz auditioned for
Bob Sablack's newly formed Plague. Sablack inevitably
went back to playing with Johnny Korosec (see Plague).
When Scott, Paul and Koz regrouped they decided to create
something new and leave the Dissidents behind. With
several new instrumentals completed they decided to
look for a new singer. They didn't have to look far,
Mike Friend aka Crevo was a regular attendee at Dissident
rehearsals, and had previously been the lead singer
of the Basics. The sounds the Babushka Men created could
best be described as Cramps/Ubu meet the Little Rascals.
Crevo had a Dave Thomas/Jello Biafra kinda delivery
that meshed well with the choppy out of tune songs Paul
and Scott had written. Crevo's descriptive lyrics were
the cherry on top. Unfortunately the Babushka Men disbanded
shortly after there one and only show on Halloween night
1982 at the Lakefront. The place actually got packed
with dancers when quite a few gay revelers filtered
over from Traxx, the disco next store. Scott left for
Las Vegas shortly thereafter only to return six months
later... but band could not be revived.
