| The
crack epidemic exploded in the midst of Ronnie Reagans war against
drugs. His dear wife Nancy's "Just Say No" campaign never seemed
to catch on as much of a strong deterrent, either, during the
mid-80's. Out in the suburbs, powdered cocaine was all the rage.
In the inner cities, the crack version was riding high atop
the charts. Hell, Life magazine even ran a pictorial on how
to make it. Crack cocaine threatened to end the western world
as we knew it. If I remember right, Crack had knocked Herpes
out of the top spot and remained #1 for well over 23 weeks until
AIDS went double platinum and replaced it. Crack was a hot and
hated subject of debate at the time. And so, the two nuts that
I happened to be in a band with then, cooked up this idea (in
their usual sarcastic demeanor) that an "I Love Crack" show
would be a good theme for a gig. Those 2 Bobs (Richey and Sablack),
pressed a bunch of bumper stickers and such proclaiming statements
like "I Love Crack" or "Kick Back! Party Crack!" and we passed
them out during a gig down at Pats in the Flats. The joke was
warmly received and it figured to end there. Enter the picture
Darryl Whalen. He actually placed some of these upon the back
of his beat up station wagon and drove around with them on it
for the better course of the next year. Too many details to
go into from here, but Darryl had more than his fair share of
run-ins with the police and other "concerned" citizens during
this period. I "crack" up every time I think about it. What
the hell was he thinking, slapping them on the back of his car.
Balls and more balls. (Cheese Borger)
